Welcome to the Ocean Drive (CR621) Upgrades and Bridge Improvements Local Concept Development Study website!

Cape May County, in conjunction with the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization (SJTPO) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is performing a Local Concept Development (LCD) Study for Ocean Drive (CR621) Upgrades and Bridge Improvements.

The bridges along the Ocean Drive Causeway are experiencing a number of simultaneous and pressing concerns due to degraded and obsolete infrastructure. The most recent Bridge Re-Evaluation Reports identified a number of concerns related to the deck, superstructure and substructure of the bridges. The bridges are currently safe to travel on, however without significant on-going structural maintenance, the bridges could require a more restrictive load posting (further restrictions on the type and weight of vehicles allowed to use the bridge) due to their advancing deterioration.

A Local Concept Development (LCD) Study is the first phase of the Local Project Delivery Process for transportation improvements. During this phase a Purpose and Need Statement will be developed focusing on the need to address structural and operational deficiencies of the bridge. The LCD Phase also includes data collection, coordination with local municipal officials, community stakeholders, and Federal and State permitting agencies; the development of a reasonable number of sensible and practical conceptual alternatives; and the recommendation of a Preliminary Preferred Alternative (PPA). The LCD Phase is anticipated to be complete by the Spring of 2019.

Community involvement is an important part of the LCD process and we encourage the community and general public to participate and provide input during the study. Please attend our upcoming Public Information Center on May 3rdth. See our Announcements page for details.
